Common Air Conditioning Terms

February 20th, 2012

We live & breathe air conditioning every day, but we realize many common air conditioning terms & acronyms can be confusing. Below are some of the most common terms used in the air conditioning industry which can help you understand your system, air conditioning service, and answer questions when buying a new air conditioning systems. These are arranged in ABC order so if you are looking for something specific it should be easy to find. Of course, if you have any additional questions please feel free to call or email Sansone anytime and we would be happy to help educate you.

Air Conditioner
Any device that can change the temperature, humidity or general quality of the air. There are many different brands & types of air conditioner’s that Sansone sells & services such as Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Ruud, Goodman, Amana, Lennox, etc.

Air cleaner
Any device that removes undesirable particles from moving air. If you have allergy problems, asthma, or pets an upgraded air cleaner may be a good idea for your home. We sell many different models such as the Carrier Infinity Air Purifier, Trane Clean Effects, Ultra Violet Lights, RGF Guardian Air, and many more. You can learn more at our dedicated indoor air quality page.

Air flow
The amount of air the system circulates through your home, expressed in cubic feet per minute (cfm). Proper air flow depends on the outdoor unit, the indoor unit, the ductwork and even whether the filters are clean and the condition of the evaporator coil. If you have areas in your home that have poor air flow this may be an issue of your unit or duct work and most of the time we can fix these issues for you so that you are comfortable in your home.

Air handler
This refers to the indoor unit and is an air moving and/or mixing unit. Residential air handlers typically include a blower, heater, evaporator coil, an expansion device, and other parts. There are many different model air handlers available that can help with energy efficiency & comfort.

BTU
BTU refers to a British thermal unit and is the amount of heat required to raise or lower the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Every ton of air conditioning measures at 12,000 BTU’s. Therefore, if you have a 3 ton air conditioning, it will put out approximately 36,000 BTU’s. Every home should be measured with a Manual-J load calculation to determine how many BTU’s your home requires to properly cool/heat.

CFM
Abbreviation for cubic feet per minute, a standard measurement of airflow. A typical system requires 400 cfm per ton of air conditioning. Therefore, a 3 ton system moves 1200 cfm’s.

Compressor
This is the heart of an air conditioning system. It is part of the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant in order to meet the cooling requirements of the system.

Condenser
This refers to the outside unit.

Condenser coil
This is the outdoor coil in the condenser. In an air conditioner, the coil dissipates heat from the refrigerant, changing the refrigerant from vapor to liquid. In a heat pump system, the coil absorbs heat from the outdoors when on the heating cycle.

Condenser fan
This is the fan in the outside unit that circulates air over the air-cooled condenser.

Drain pan
This also referred to as a condensate pan. This is a pan used to catch and collect condensate (in residential systems vapor is liquefied on the indoor coil, collected in the drain pan and removed through a drain line).

Ductwork
A pipe or conduit through which air is delivered. Ducts are typically made of metal, fiberboard or a flexible material. In a home comfort system, the size and application of ductwork is critical to performance and is as important as the equipment. In South Florida, the majority of ductwork is made of flexible material.

Evaporator coil
This refers to the indoor coil in the air handler. This is a tubing coil in which a volatile liquid evaporates and absorbs heat. This is where the refrigerant evaporates as it absorbs heat from the indoor air that passes over the coil.

Filter
Any device that removes impurities through a straining process. There are many different types & qualities of filters available. You can find options on our dedicated filter page

Humidistat
A humidity-sensing control that cycles the air conditioner on and off in order to control humidity in a residence. This is typically only used when a homeowner is out of town as it does not take comfort into consideration.

Package Unit
A heating and cooling system contained in one outdoor unit. A package unit is typically installed beside the house or on the roof. We sell & service many different brand package units such as Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Ruud, Goodman, Lennox, Bard, Goettl, etc.

Refrigerant
A chemical that produces a refrigerating effect while expanding and vaporizing. Most residential air conditioning systems contain R-22 or R-410 refrigerant.

R-22 Refrigerant
R-22 is the common name for hydro-chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC). R-22 has been used as a refrigerant by HVAC manufacturers for over 40 years, but studies in the past decade have shown that HCFCs contain chlorine, an ozone-depleting agent. For this reason, the United States Clean Air Act has set a target date for January 1, 2010, on which HVAC manufacturers must cease the production of products that use R-22. This is also commonly referred to as Freon.

R-410a
This is the refrigerant used in newer systems since R-22 units can no longer be produced and is seen as a more environmentally safe refrigerant. This is also commonly referred to as Puron.

SEER
This is a common acronym which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is a measure of cooling efficiency for air conditioners. It is similar to MPG rating for cars. The higher the SEER, the more energy efficient the unit and the less you pay to the utility company. The U.S. Government’s minimum SEER rating is 13.

Split System
The combination of an outdoor unit (air conditioner or heat pump) with an indoor unit (furnace or air handler). Split systems must be matched for optimum efficiency and the minimum system rating is 13 seer.

Thermostat
A thermostat is a device used to control temperature. We offer many different types of thermostats such as digital, programmable, touchscreen, and more. Higher end thermostats have the ability to control both temperature & humidity for optimum indoor comfort. Thermostats can even be installed that can be accessed from the internet, smartphones, and tablets.

Ton / Tonnage
A unit of measurement used to determine cooling capacity. One ton is equivalent to 12,000 BTUs per hour. Most residential homes have systems that are 1.5 – 5 tons.

Two-stage Cooling
This refers to the outdoor units being able to operate in two different speeds. Two-stage cooling is considered to be more efficient, because it operates at low speed most of the time. However, on days when more air conditioning is required, it switches to the next stage for maximum comfort. For example, if you have a 5 ton system, a 2-speed would have the ability to run on 3.5 tons when that is all is required to cool your home at the set temperature. If all 5 tons is needed it shifts to high speed to meet the set point.

Variable-speed motor
The fan motor inside variable-speed air handlers is designed to vary its speed based on your home’s air conditioning requirements. Working in conjunction with your thermostat, it keeps the appropriate-temperature air circulating throughout your home, reducing temperature variances in your home. It also provides greater air circulation and filtration, better temperature distribution, humidity control, higher efficiency, and quiet performance.

Zoning System A method of dividing a home into different comfort zones so each zone can be independently controlled depending on use and need.

The Importance of A/C Tune Ups

Many homeowners do not realize their home air conditioning system operates approximately 2800 hours per year. To put this “run time” into perspective, a car driven for the same 2800 hours at 65 miles per hour would travel 182,000 miles. No one would consider such a long trip without arranging for oil changes, lubrication, and routing tune-ups along the way to ensure the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the vehicle.

Your home’s comfort system is your home’s largest and most expensive appliance. It works hard around the clock and after a long hot summer, your A/C system needs a thorough tune-up and cleaning. It will help keep the system running at peak performance, improve your indoor air quality, help to prevent breakdowns, and save you money in the process.

Call us TODAY to schedule your Sansone Energy Savings Tune Up.

The Famous Sansone Baby
Our general manager, Anthony Pascucci, recently had a baby boy named Jackson. His wife was tired one afternoon and said, “Jackson why don’t you take a nap and made a snoring noise.” She quickly discovered that he was startled by the noise. She showed Anthony when he got home from work and both of them thinking it was very funny decided to record it to post on YouTube to share with family & friends. To make a long story short, the video gained worldwide popularity quickly and recevied over 250,000 views the first week on YouTube & over 2.5 million views on Yahoo. The video was also featured on the NBC Today Show & Inside Edition. We get a kick out of it every time we watch it and we figured you would to!!!

Carrier Infinity Greenspeed Installation

Official Carrier press release on the new Greenspeed system:

Carrier GreenSpeed Intelligence Enables Units to Deliver Highest Heating Efficiency Rating of Any Air Source Heat Pump on the Market

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 16, 2011 – Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), unveiled the HVAC industryís highest efficiency residential, air source heat pump at the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Conference & Indoor Air Expo in San Antonio, Texas. The new heat pump delivers an HSPF heating efficiency rating up to 13, the highest of any air source heat pump on the market, and cooling efficiencies of up to 20 SEER.

The innovation behind this advanced heat pump is known as CarrierÆ Greenspeedô intelligence and will be available as part of the InfinityÆ heat pump line, ranging 2 to 5 tons. Carrier Corp., the worldís leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, improves the world around us through engineered innovation and environmental stewardship.

ìCarrier is committed to developing residential heating and cooling products that take innovation to a higher degree,î said Chris Nelson, vice president sales and marketing, Carrier Residential and Commercial Systems. ìWe are proud our new Infinity heat pump with Greenspeed intelligence will be the highest heating efficiency air source heat pump available. In the 3-ton size, it has 29 to 69 percent higher heating efficiency than any competitive product within the residential, air source heat pump category.î

Carrier GreenSpeed Heat Pump

Carrier GreenSpeed will give homeowners the comfort of consistent indoor temperatures associated with variable speed technology while lowering their electric costs. The new line of heat pumps is designed to operate fluidly between 40 and 100 percent capacity while heating or cooling a home. This innovation was made possible by pairing the superior communication ability of Carrier Greenspeed intelligence with a Copeland ScrollÆ variable speed compressor from Emerson Climate Technologies, optimized specifically for this heat pump. The unprecedented capacity control can match the load in a home during a wide range of conditions. This flexibility allows for improved temperature control and dehumidification as well as enhanced Infinity zoning, regardless of climate. The Carrier GreenSpeed is also capable of maintaining consistent, higher leaving air temperatures even when outdoor temperatures fall into the teens, improving owner comfort. Standard heat pumps tend to have cooler leaving air that cools further as outdoor temperatures decline.

ìThe Infinity heat pump with Carrier Greenspeed intelligence is an HVAC innovation in a class of its own,î said Nelson. ìItís just the latest example of how Carrier continues to introduce cutting-edge residential heating and cooling solutions.î

The new line of variable speed heat pumps has distinctive features that will benefit both Carrier dealers and their customers. Dealers will appreciate the ease in installation created by the two-wire control connection to the outdoor unit and Infinity Control diagnostic capabilities. Consumers will welcome the variable speed motorís lower energy usage and more consistent indoor temperature control all year long.

The heat pump also employs an upgraded Infinity control software package that constantly monitors a wider range of critical system parameters, including suction pressure and compressor temperature. This intelligence helps ensure performance efficiency, optimized comfort and reliable operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
ìThe Infinity heat pump with Carrier Greenspeed intelligence is a revolutionary breakthrough for home comfort and advances Carrierís natural leadership in environmental technologies,î said John Mandyck, Carrier vice president, Sustainability & Environmental Strategies. ìCarrier Greenspeed intelligence also demonstrates how technological innovation can reduce energy use and carbon emissions, continuing Carrierís long-standing commitment to providing sustainable solutions.î

The new line of heat pumps is currently in the final stage of field testing, with consumer availability scheduled for this summer.

The new line of Carrier Infinity Greenspeed heat pump systems are NOW available from your Carrier experts, Sansone Corporation.

Energy Savings Tips for Seasonal Residents

May 23rd, 2011
We understand that seasonal residents face unique energy challenges, such as:
  • Avoiding high energy costs during the summer months when your home is vacant
  • Reducing the risk of mold and mildew developing in your absence
  • Deciding how to handle your FPL account and electric bills while you”re gone
Here are some tips and billing options to help protect your home and furnishings, as well as manage your energy costs, while you”re away:
Tip for Seasonal Residents

Programmable thermostats can help prevent mold in unoccupied homes

One way to help prevent mold from developing in your vacant home is to control the indoor relative humidity inside. You can accomplish this and still manage your energy costs by using a programmable thermostat. Program your air conditioner to run at 72 degrees for just two hours before sunrise and at 88 degrees the rest of the day. If your air conditioner does not have a programmable thermostat, set it to 80 degrees. Thermostats in condos and apartments should be set at 77 degrees to make the air conditioner run enough to provide significant dehumidification.

Repairing any leaks in your air conditioning ducts helps control the humidity in your home, too. Schedule a duct test to find out if you have leaks.

Additional ways to save

Step Action
Refrigerator
  • If left on, turn to warmest setting.
  • If turned off, clean interior with solution of 1 tbsp. of baking soda in 1 quart of water; dry thoroughly and leave doors open.
Lighting
  • Use timers or daylight sensors if you leave lighting on for security reasons.
Swimming Pool
  • Turn off pool heater at the circuit breaker.
  • Set filter pump timer to limit run time to six hours a day during summer and four hours in winter.
