FAQs
Q. How do you change an AC filter?
A. The filter is easy to change. It should be located in one of two places, the return grill(s) or at the inside air handler unit. If the filter is in the return, the grill should have a small latch or screw keeping it closed, the grill is hinged to allow it to swing open for easy filter changes. Simply remove the old filter and replace with the same size assuming it fit right. If you have a flat return grill with no hinges, chances are the filter will be in the bottom of the air handler. Open the bottom filter door and you should see the filter. Pull the filter out and replace it.
Q. How often should I change my air conditioning
filter?
A: Different filters are meant to be changed at different intervals, but every 1-3 months is the most common recommended minimum time frame. The most important thing to remember about home and business air filters is to change them regularly. Even the highest-quality filter can't do its job right if it's clogged with a thick layer of particles it's been filtering from the air. Brand new homes or business, as well as homes or businesses where there is remodeling or construction going on, will need more frequent filter changes to compensate for the extra dust and residue in the air.
Q. How do I find my filter dimensions?
A. Most furnace filters have two sets of dimensions: Nominal and Actual. If your filter has actual measured dimensions of 15½" x 24¾" x ¾", you would typically buy a filter based on the nominal dimensions of 16" x 25" x 1".
When measuring your filter, the width & depth are interchangeable:
You want your furnace filter to fit snugly, without having to force it into place.
Q. What is a MERV Rating?
A. MERV means Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value which was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Engineers - ASHRAE. MERV values vary from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV value is the value the more efficient the filter will be in trapping airborne particles.
