First things first, let’s diagnose the noise. Learn 5 of the most common air conditioning noises, what causes the sounds, and what you should do next.

1. AC Making Banging Noise

The cause: An air conditioner making a banging noise is usually a sign that there is a loose component being jostled around within your AC. This could be a connecting rod, the crankshaft, a piston pin, or even something as simple as a screw. In certain cases, you may need to replace the compressor.

What you should do: Turn off your air conditioner. If you feel comfortable taking a look at things yourself, you can inspect the condenser unit and check to see if there is anything that has come loose. If so, replace the component. It can be difficult to find the source of the noise, so if that’s the case, contact your local HVAC tech.

2. AC Making Buzzing Noise

The cause: An air conditioner making a  buzzing noise can mean several things from something as simple as debris in the outdoor unit or as serious as an electrical issue.

What you should do: While clearing debris is the best-case scenario and something you can fix yourself because a buzzing sound can indicate an electrical issue, we recommend turning off your system right away and contacting a professional.

3. AC Making Clicking Noise

The cause: It is normal to hear a clicking noise when your AC starts up and shuts down. However, ongoing clicking sounds aren’t normal. If you do hear consistent clicking, it could be a defective control or your thermostat is broken.

What you should do: If the clicking noise only occurs when your AC turns on and off, do nothing. If it persists, check your thermostat as it may be time to replace it. If this isn’t the case and the problem persists, schedule an appointment with your local technician.

4. AC Making Humming Noise

The cause: An AC unit making a humming noise can be caused by parts that have loosened within your system. It can also indicate a bigger problem with the motor or loose wires.

What you should do: If you feel confident doing so, you can check the components within your condenser unit to see if anything has become loose. If you’d rather leave it to a pro, call your favorite HVAC technician.

5. AC Making Squealing Noise

The cause: A squealing noise coming from your air conditioner can often be caused by an issue with the blower wheel or fan motor. Both of these will make a squealing sound when they’re on their way out and in need of replacement.

What you should do: If you hear this noise frequently and just upon start-up, it’s probably not something you need to address right away. However, if this noise is a new occurrence, the blower wheel or fan motor more than likely need to be replaced.
