How to Plunge a Toilet

Clogged toilets are something every homeowner will have to deal with at some point in their life. It’s a very common plumbing problem that fortunately is typically an easy fix. That’s why it’s a good idea to get familiar with a handy-dandy plunger and the simple steps to removing a toilet clog.

If you’re dealing with a clogged toilet, fear not. All you need is a plunger, a few minutes of your time, and our quick 7-step guide.

How to Plunge a Toilet in 7 Steps

Step 1. Check the water level. Make sure there is standing water in the toilet bowl. Ideally, there should be enough water to cover the rim of the plunger cup.

Step 2. Make sure the flange of the plunger is completely pulled out from the cup. The flange needs to be completely pulled out from the cup. Once it is, lower the plunger into the bowl at an angle so that the cup fills with as much water as possible. Try to trap as little air in the cup as possible.

Step 3. Fit the cup over the toilet drain hole. Fit the cup over the toilet drain hole so the flange is inside the hole. The cup should form a complete seal around the outside of the hole.

Step 4. Use the handle, push down on the cup. Grip the plunger handle in both of your hands, and forcefully push down on the cup. Pull the cup up being careful to not break the cup’s seal around the hole. Repeat this motion five or so times then pull the cup off with the last thrust.

Step 5. Reposition the cup and repeat these steps as needed until the bowl empties itself.

Step 6. Set the plunger side and remove the tank lid. Locate the flapper at the bottom of the tank. Flush the toilet.

Step 7. Assess the flush. If the toilet flushes normally, you’re all set! Set the lid back on the tank. If the toilet is still clogged, reach into the tank and push the flapper down over the hole. This will stop the flow of water from the tank to the bowl. Repeat steps 1 – 5.
